It’s Simple: Recycling by Mykalanne Gutierrez –

Category: Uncategorized – 2:41 am

by: Mykalanne Gutierrez

So today is Earth Day, right? So I thought I’d do a little article about how Recycling is important to this planet that we happen to live on.

There are actually a lot of things that you can recycle: Water, Energy, Paper, Metal, Aluminum Cans, Glass, Plastic, Styrofoam, Steel, & even the Junk that you get in your mail. All of these things, as you know, will end up on the freeway & regrettably, in the ocean; but you’re probably asking, “So what’s your point?” Do me a favor & hold your horses because I’m getting there.

The basic principle of Recycling is to collect items that have already been used & reprocessing them so they can be used again; pretty simple, right? Of course you don’t do this yourself, or I guess you can if you’d like; but that’s what Junk Yards are for. Anyway, when you recycle, you pretty much save energy. When a manufacturing company decides to make new stuff out of old stuff, it saves a lot of energy. A good example of this would be the recycled notebooks you get at Target; all of the paper is recycled & can be recycled again for another notebook’s use-not to mention you save a tree or two.

When you do the world a big favor & recycle, you can not only make this planet a better place to live, but also reduce pollution & improve environmental conditions. When someone as great as you recycles, you help prevent the global climate change, reduce greenhouse gas release, & you even cut back the amount of fuel used! How great is that, right? Anyway, by doing all this, it eventually leads to you and companies saving natural resources. Let’s look at an example, shall we? If the New York Times were to recycle all of the newspapers that they print every single day, there wouldn’t be the need to cut & kill a thousand trees a day; see what I’m saying? As of now, all trees in different rain forests are being cut down at an alarming rate & by this time in four years, researchers are saying that there will be no more trees left.

Not only are you helping the world, but you’re helping yourself save money; I bet you didn’t think about that one. It’s true, since it’s expensive to start production on something new with brand new materials, manufacturers are going to want that money reimbursed so they can continue making the expensive stuff. When you buy things that are recycled, it’s obviously cheaper to make, so you know you’re going to buy it for a low price. Even when you think about it, all the junk & trash that isn’t recycled is taking up a bunch of space in random places. When you take the time to recycle & separate your aluminum’s from your plastic, it allows more space for things that really do belong in landfills like old, used paper towels & every other thing that’s biodegradable.

Regardless if you think that recycling is something that can benefit the world or if you simply think that it’s another “hippie” movement, I at least encourage you to do your part. I’m not saying you have to become obsessed with it & always keep track of what you recycle & what you don’t recycle, all I’m saying is that this Earth appreciates every little bit you can do for it; considering it has provided you with a place to live, eat, & pretty much do everything else; you know? Paper Recycling And Recycled Paper Printing by Janice Jenkins

Category: Uncategorized – 7:02 pm

by: Janice Jenkins

March 27, 2010 was a big day for our planet. That day, everyone around the world closed their lights for 60 minutes in celebration of global cooperation in an attempt to fight global warming. Earth Hour is done every year to send message around the globe to help fight climate change and save our planet.

That activity is done only once a year. Obviously, it is not enough to save our ailing Earth completely. We have to do drastic measures today if we do not want to experience strong storms, floods, earthquakes, and other natural calamities in increasing frequency. So what do tree-huggers recommend everyone do to help reverse the effect of climate change? RECYCLE.

Recycling is now a quickly budding discipline due largely to the environmental catastrophes experienced in all corners of the globe. As a whole, recycling is not only environment-friendly, but a source of income as well.

A growing trend in recycling today is paper recycling and recycled paper printing. With paper consumption increasing dramatically these days, paper wastes also increases. Recycled paper and recycled paper printing are beneficial and efficient ways of fulfilling our responsibility to ourselves and to nature.

1. Benefits of paper recycling and recycled paper printing. Although end products of recycled papers have rough texture, there is modern technology today that uses bleaching materials to give the paper a smooth quality. So, if you are using a recycled paper in your postcard or brochure printing you will get almost or even better result as using commercial papers. Recycled papers are also cheaper and often more durable, giving you a much better and cost effective output.

2. Printing in recycled papers. The process is basically the same as commercial papers only that you can use eco-friendly inks such as soy and vegetable for a more economical and better quality result.

3. Recycled paper products. The use of recycled paper is basically endless. You can use it in notebooks, scrapbooks, office documents, and even business materials such as postcard and color brochure printing. Also, creative individuals can make their own printed paper bags and artworks out of recycled paper. The possibility is endless when it comes to recycled paper.

4. Paper recycling facts.

a. Israel alone consumes about 1 million tons of paper each year.

b. Almost 40% of all waste in landfills is paper.

c. Most paper thrown as waste is high quality paper.

d. Americans buy about 62 million newspapers every day, and around 44 million of them are just thrown out.

e. On an average, an American will use about 600 to 700 lbs. of paper each year.

f. One recycled tin can would power a television for about 3 hours while one plastic bottle can power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.

g. Approximately, 16% of the money you pay for the items you buy is for the packaging, which eventually ends up as waste.

h. If recycling were made easier, 9 out of 10 people would recycle.

Essentially, paper recycling and recycled paper printing is easy. It can be done at home, in your office, and almost anywhere. So, do you part in saving our planet. Go out there and recycle. Doing so not only reduces the cost of paper printing, but also allow you to share in the noble act of conserving the beauty of nature, especially the trees.

More Biosphere Reserves Named by Darewin Amio Ocampo

Category: Uncategorized – 12:02 pm

by: Darewin Amio Ocampo

Climate change is on the rampage, devastating many countries with different phenomena such as violent storms of unprecedented strength and rising sea levels that threaten to devour lowly elevated countries. If left unattended, climate change may grow to an extinction level event. To answer to the call to take action, the United Nations, as the biggest organization of independent countries had launched its campaign for the shift to sustainable energy also sometimes called clean or green energy.

Sustainable energy is the act of providing energy that sufficiently meets the demands of today without sacrificing the capability of the next generations to meet their needs come their time. All renewable energy sources such as such as plant matter, solar power, wind power, wave power, geothermal power and tidal power usually fall in this category. Sustainable energy sources may also include technologies that make energy generation more efficient. Conventional fission as well as other types of nuclear power can also be classified as sustainable. Such classification however, is very controversial because of the different dangers nuclear power brings along such as peak uranium, radioactive waste disposal and the risks of disaster due to accident, terrorism, or natural disaster.

The United Nations being the global leader for the advancement of sustainable energy has started helping create and develop sites for enhancing current techniques as well as developing new methods of generating green energy. The UN has recently named 13 more international sites dedicated to the development and testing of alternative approaches to environmentally sensitive economic growth, bringing the total number of such sites to 534.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had announced that all 534 sites are now focused on the advancement of biosphere technology, which involves the process of turning common waste into green electricity. The UN, in a press release, defined biosphere reserves as “places to test different approaches to integrated management of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine resources and biodiversity,” the UN agency said in a press release.”

One of the latest Biosphere Sites is located in San Fernando, Philippines and aims to introduce the production of green electricity in the country, and other parts of the globe.

Green Solutions by Darewin Amio Ocampo –

Category: Uncategorized – 1:02 pm

by: Darewin Amio Ocampo

Human activity has brought about grave negative effects on our global environment. And the worst impact by far is climate change which has lead to erratic weather patterns that threaten the survival of countless animal and plant species. Rising sea levels is another major problem caused by global warming melting the polar ice caps which has resulted in thousands of islands being submerged under the ocean. Mankind is destroying our precious planet and many individuals, organizations and governments, headed by the United Nations have called for the use and further development of available green solutions.

Green solutions encompass all procedures, methods, and practices employed by individuals and institutions to decrease or if possible completely eliminate from their activities problems that can cause adverse effects to the global environment, including the planets ecosystems and natural resources. Green solutions were developed after man made the realization that the planet is in danger because of man’s own doing. The rapid heating up of the earth due to the greenhouse effect, have caused global alarm. And today, the business community, from which most carbon emissions came from, seeks to redeem itself and correct the damage.

There are as many green solutions as there are environmentally hazardous activities because much research and development have been conducted to answer all problems the routine activities of man has caused the planet. But today, the focus is on the root of the problem, the brown energy technologies. Brown energy refers to energy that is generated from sources or in processes that are harmful to the environment. Examples of brown energy are coal and oil energy which release huge amounts of carbonious gases into the atmosphere whenever combusted.

First generation solutions focused on mitigating the harmful effects of brown energy generation methods. But after some time, man has realized that lessening the by-products of these technologies is simply not enough. Thus, green solutions of the past have evolved into those of today, solutions which seek to provide alternative sources of energy so we no longer need to rely on brown technologies.

These now processes of generating energy are called green energy solutions. These solutions use methods that belong to the sustainability industry to produce energy, usually in the form of electrical power. Popular examples of these green solutions are solar power, wind power, biomass power, and wave power generation. Many countries have already started their transition to green energy from brown energy. And the huge support for such technologies has fueled further research and development.

Of all green solutions, the ones with receive most attention today are those that belong to the Waste-to-Energy (WtE) group. The said category of green energy generation, as its name suggests, focuses on converting wastes into energy. WtE technologies have come a long way since the discovery of the incineration process. Today, more efficient and more environment friendly processes are being developed such as the gasification technology. Gasifiers break down solid wastes into their most basic components and then turn them into steam which can be used to generate electricity.

President Obama’s Long Lost Ancestor From The 17th Century by …

Category: Uncategorized – 1:01 pm

by: Howard Jacobs

There has been controversy surrounding the ancestry of Barack Obama. A top research team has looked into this matter and traced Obama’s family tree back to the 1600s, where Obama’s ancestor Barack Shakespeare Obama was a great leader and community organizer in Oxfordshire, England.

A parchment was discovered that documented a speech given by this ancestor of Obama’s. The parchment was in bad shape but was taken to parchment restoration experts where a process called infilling was used to fill in missing areas. The parchment was cleaned and tears were carefully mended using goldbeater’s skin, which is the outer membrane of a calf’s intestine. Even with the best efforts of top restoration experts, there are some parts of the speech that were unrecoverable. Nevertheless, with the best of intentions and with hopes that any missing sentences have been filled in true to the original intent of the document, here is the speech given by Barack Shakespeare Obama, probably at some point in the 1660s.

Madame Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, distinguished guests, friends, Romans and Countrymen, I come here today to praise our great nation. Almost two years ago, I took office amid religious wars such as that between the Catholics and the Huguenots, and that between the Muslims and the Hindus. There were wars breaking out all over the world. There was the Polish-Ottoman War, the Franco-Dutch War, Russo-Turkish Wars, and the Nine Years War in Ulster. The Spanish Armada was invading England. The English Armada was invading Spain. The Bubonic Plague had killed hundreds of thousands of people. Weapons of mass devastation such as high powered cannons and flintlock muskets became all too common and threatened the safety of law abiding citizens. We were in a period of unprecedented inflation as greedy speculators in London and Paris had drawn wealth away from the rest of the world, while devastating the environment in the New World by mining silver and gold.

In short, I inherited a mess. Experts from across the political spectrum warned that if we did not act, we might face a catastrophe. So we acted – immediately and aggressively. And two years later, the worst of the storm has passed. The storm is receding and the skies are brightening but problems remain. Many people are still out of work. Those who lost loved ones to the Bubonic plague, which my Health Department now refers to as the U1C1 Virus, can attest to the need for a national health insurance plan. Religious wars and wars of aggression are still raging all over the world.

O, a woman has lost consciousness! What dastardly deed is this? Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here for my smile was too much for this poor woman to bear!

At this point, Barack Shakespeare Obama, for some unexplained reason stopped his speech and turned to the side of the stage as if speaking to an invisible person, and said the following:

Stop up the access and passage to remorse,

That no compunctious visitings of nature

Shake my fell purpose to remake civilization.

I have no spur

To prick the sides of my intent, but only

Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself.

Perchance I should consider the desires of the people.

But that would be giving in to conscience.

Thus conscience does make cowards of us all.

If it were done when ’tis done, then ’twere well

It were done quickly.

They don’t see my greatness or they fear it.

Be not afraid of my greatness!

Lord, what fools these mortals be.

O, what more favour can I do to thee,

To sunder his that was thine enemy?

Though we have seen better days,

It is not me who is to blame for the mess.

The way of mine enemies is wrong.

That way madness lies.

I will thrive for I am a wolf ready to strike though

He’s mad that trusts in the tameness of a wolf.

My strength is my words and while

My words fly up, my thoughts remain below.

The people in the audience were confused by this sudden stream of consciousness but one person in the crowd was heard shouting:

One may smile, and smile, and be a villain!

Obama replied “That’s alright, that’s OK…”, as the person who shouted was removed by Knights and Centurions.

BS Obama then continued his speech: I believe we have to talk to our enemies in order to understand them better. Strong leaders talk to their adversaries, and we will do so, no matter what anyone else says. For this reason, I have scheduled a series of meetings with Ivan the Terrible. Whatever differences exist between countries and religions, we can solve by talking. Therefore, myself, Ivan the Terrible and Napoleon will sit down for a summit where the finest ale and mutton will be served.

Now I want to take a moment if I may to give a shoutout to a great man in the crowd today. Copernicus, would you please stand and take a bow. Thank you. For those of you who may not know, Copernicus is the man who realized that it is the earth that revolves around the sun and not the sun that revolves around the earth. There are people who would like to go back to the days when it was thought that the sun revolved around the earth. My administration is not here to go backwards.

We will not be a bystander in the fight against climate change. We will lead the world in new green technology. There is scientific consensus that the conglomeration of people into large cities has created the need for too many horses. Matter that is expelled from the horse’s intestines has created a change in the earth’s atmosphere resulting in the heating of the earth. In addition, the constant burning of lamps for street lighting creates smoke which stays in the air and traps sunlight.

There is a liquid called oil that may be the salvation of all our environmental problems. With this ‘oil’ we will one day be able to have carriages without the pollution that horses create. We will also be able to create bright light without all the smoke. Until that day happens it is incumbent upon all of us to use our horses less. Those of you who insist on riding horses can eliminate tons of pollution by feeding your horses properly. By not over-feeding your horse, we can save thousands of pounds of horse waste. We should also get into the habit of using smaller horses. People who are in the habit of saying “A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!” should change their thinking and say instead; “Give me a waste efficient horse or I’m going to walk.”

This is the leadership that we are providing – an ale and mutton summit that advances the common security and prosperity of all people. We have gone from a bystander to a leader in the fight against climate change. We are helping developing countries to feed themselves, and continuing the fight against the Bubonic Plague. Our strength lies in our diversity. Sweet are the uses of diversity. In addition, we are going to provide new green jobs which will help the economy and the environment.

Right here in Oxfordshire, we have opened up a new factory that will provide 75 new jobs. This factory will manufacture graphite pencils. Graphite pencils are the future and we must look forward. Why should we buy graphite pencils from China or any other place when we can produce them here at home? We have spent millions of pounds in order to create this new, clean graphite pencil industry and these new jobs are the fruit of our hard work.

So, despite plagues, economic catastrophes, wars, religious intolerance, and global warming, we are continuing to move forward with the change I promised. I didn’t say it would be easy as these are all the problems that I inherited from my predecessor. I still have confidence in the citizens of the country. You are all masters of your fates. And I will make sure that your fates turn out in a way deemed positive.

Nature Calls for Your Help by John Brooks –

Category: Uncategorized – 12:06 am

by: John Brooks

All the countries have been thinking of solutions to achieve the safe and healthy living than can e experienced by anybody. One of the solutions they agreed with is total remediation that any community can do and all the citizens can have the abilities to help. Beautiful spots like beaches, falls, mountains, cave needs your care and help to have a wonderful place to explore. Everyone lives with the help of the food, water and other things the nature provides to each and every one of us. Both the humans and the nature need each other that we ought to take good care of our environment. Even the wildlife needs their homes and the food and water our nature provides is badly needed to live.

Reaching the top of a high mountain is great yet looking for the bald mountains is a worst scenario. Mountains give us everything we need especially food, water, shelter and wood. Many wildlife is also present in the area so as illegal doing brings high mortality rate of people doing it. This doings cause flash floods which can sometimes destroy a whole village.

Illegal logging made the former green mountain into a bald one which does not have even a seedling of trees. Not only people get affected but also the wildlife such as birds and other animal as their habitat is destroyed. Birds do not have plenty of food for themselves as they migrate from one place to another because of the climate change. Because of this the most important thing we should do is plant new seedlings as an exchange to the old trees cut into pieces. What we should be after now is the environmental remediation that our nature needs to rehabilitate.

As to the bodies of water, garbage and pollution have always been a problem in each area as it can harm children and even the old ones. The problem gets worst as years gone by and more people have been witnessing the water filled with garbage which is black in color. This situation is not good as it can affect the largest part of the planet. This situation has always needed the help for environmental cleanup to prevent worst scenarios to happen.

Other than those practices, people should also practice to plant vegetables and fruits without using any chemicals on the plant. This fruits and vegetables are called as organic ones that all of us needs now to prevent illnesses and maintain a healthy body. Safe potable water is also needed for everybody to have a healthy living and help prevent any illnesses to happen.

The Last Gallon of Gas on Earth by Eric Melin –

Category: Uncategorized – 12:04 am

by: Eric Melin

“That’s $855,000 going once. Going twice. Sold! For $855,000 to the bearded man in the front row, the last known gallon of gasoline on the Earth.”

“And the most expensive gallon of gasoline ever,” thought the bearded man. Pablo Ganley felt exhausted after the seven ferocious minutes of bidding. He was an accountant, not a collector. But he won it. It cost him his life savings, but he was now the owner of the final few drops of the magic liquid that once moved humanity in so many ways.

On the ride home Ganley sat alone in a private room on the train with the small gas can on the seat beside him. Secure in its bright red, refurbished metal container, this last gasoline was 91-octane Chevron Supreme with Techron, refined from genuine Saudi crude, vintage 2024. The lab tests confirmed it. There was even a certificate of authenticity.

Ganley had kept the domed can covered with a black cotton cloth so that people would mistake it for a small bird cage. Otherwise who knows how much harassment he might get. It angered him to even think about it. People do not understand, he thought. This train of thought reminded him again of the mistake he’d made a few weeks earlier, right after seeing the advertisement about the auction.

In his excitement, he had let it slip to his colleague Kim that he was interested in attending and bidding on the gasoline. Then he added, unwisely, that he was working on rebuilding a 1968 pick-up truck. In reply he got an uncomfortable silence and a puzzled, almost offended, look from Kim. A moment later she smiled.

“Good one Pablo,” Kim said. “You totally caught me off guard. You’re so totally not a jokester most of the time. So the next thing you’re going to tell me is that you’re reviving slavery and cigarette smoking, right?”

He could only fake a smile and change the subject. But he’d seethed about it ever since. To think that Kim and others really looked back on the Age of Oil the same way they looked back on American slavery and smoking! There was no comparison. Slavery was obviously evil, he thought. Cigarettes cause cancer. No one had ever honored the cultures that spawned such things.

Oil, on the other hand, was not evil, no matter the lies they teach in school these days about climate change, terrorism and all the supposedly toxic side-effects of petrochemicals. No way. Oil pulled America out of the mud and made it the most muscular, powerful nation on Earth. Those were the days!

According to Ganley’s read on history, it was because the U.S.A. adopted all that anti-fossil fuel propaganda that the nation had declined. Now it was just another washed up superpower has-been, just like not-so-merry-old England. Today the only superpower was Bolivia – the lithium capital of the world. Lithium for batteries. Bolivia! In South America! How his father would have laughed at the very suggestion of it!

Ganley suddenly felt the need to commune with his gasoline. He lifted the gas can onto his lap, unscrewed the brass cap and gently sniffed. Then quickly twisted it shut again. Ah! The odor cleared his head and made him salivate. Pungent and meaty, it triggered a deluge of memories.

First was the memory of being lifted by his father into the seat of an ancient blue GMC pickup truck. The truck smelled of gasoline, aged upholstery, axle grease, tobacco smoke and motor oil. The family’s name for the truck was “Stinky” because of its perennial stew of mostly toxic stenches. But Pablo loved all the scents. It was the smell of Papa. It filled him with longing for the low, idling rumble of his father’s voice and the sight of his dark and weathered living face. His father died when Pablo was only eight. He was an old man.

In Pablo’s memory the truck and his father were almost the same person. And the truck, Pablo knew, was truly was a major part of his father’s identity. Without it he would just be another indistinguishable old man heading to work on the train. The truck made the man. It was once that way for every American.

“Everyone had cars and the cars were part of their personalities,” he mused. “You could just gas up and go wherever you wanted to in a car that suited you to ‘T.’ Those were the days.”

Ganley remained lost in memories for the remaining two hours of his trip home. From the station he walked the last kilometer to his little house. He set the gas can on the kitchen counter, reheated some day-old leek soup (whatever happened to a steak and potatoes?, he wondered) then sat down to eat and finally face the big question: What was he going to with history’s last gallon of gasoline?

He couldn’t burn it: Not in an engine or even on a funeral pyre. That had been against the law for decades. And as much as he was against many things happening in society these days, he had a deep-seated revulsion for law-breaking.

He did not want to keep it as a collectible investment, like the other bidders at the auction. Those people would have treated the last gallon of gas as they did those very old bottles of wine that were bought and sold and never opened. Nevertheless, Ganley was determined to do something with the last gallon of gas. It had to be glorious. It had to do honor to the wonderful world that was lost and to his father. But what?

He finished his soup, placed the bowl and spoon in the sink and moved the gas can onto the kitchen table. He reversed a chair so he could watch the can while leaning his chin and hands on the chair back. Then he sat down and started thinking…
